Beer companies generally do a good job with their creative marketing efforts. Heineken is no exception. If you happened to be in Vancouver over the 2010 games you would know that there was generally a 3-4 hour line up to get in to the coveted Heineken House that was hyped long before the games started. Not only has Heineken created buzz around their branded events, they are no stranger to creating funny commercial videos that go viral.

In 2006 Heineken released a short commercial video with Jenifer Aniston that was banned, yet still received over 2 million views online. On March 25th of this year, a video was released portraying the all too familiar and awkward situation of being attracted to your boss’s daughter, although the video has not yet received significant views.

Heineken’s latest game show parody video was released on April 25th and in 4 days has earned this week’s pick as memelab’s viral video of the week. Here are the stats:

So you tell us, what is your favourite Heineken viral video? Or, in your opinion, which beer company is doing the best online marketing these days?

Muscle Milk is a drink that primarily replenishes protein as well as other macro nutrients used during exercise. Fitness professional Paul Hemsworth recommends Muscle Milk combined with increased carbohydrate intake immediately post-exercise to promote recovery and optimize weight loss efforts.

This isn’t Muscle Milk’s first creative approach to an advertising video. The Sexy Pilgrim hit the scene in 2009 with a certain “Weird Al” feel that attracted 904,976 views.

Muscle Milk has had greater success with their recent video launched to coincide with College students’ spring break. The frightening accuracy and comedy depicted in this video, coupled with the number of views, has earned Muscle Milk’s “Spring Break it down” video the coveted position as our favourite viral video of the week.

What is your definition of a viral video? Wikipedia says that a viral video is one that becomes popular through the process of internet sharing, typically through video sharing websites and email. Does it have to have a certain number of views and comments?

What is your definition of a viral video? Wikipedia says that a viral video is one that becomes popular through the process of internet sharing, typically through video sharing websites and email. Does it have to have a certain number of views and comments?

The meme team loves finding and sharing different variations of viral videos – from impressive viral video marketing campaigns to random dancing baby videos. Last month we featured another impressive viral video from the band OK Go. The video had some very well planned production, and wasn’t the fist viral video produced by the band, so their existing fan base was waiting for their next hit.

But what about the videos the come from nowhere with no pre-existing followers? How do those videos gain the significant title ‘Viral Video’. Before watching this week’s pick for viral video of the week, here are some stats:

Posted for 5 Months

6,864 New Shares
147 blog posts
1,083 tweets
13,963 Facebook shares
3 duplicate videos
1,120 comments

The numbers say this is undoubtedly a viral video, but why? What is it about this video that makes us want to share it and watch it over and over again? In your opinion what makes a viral video? What is it about this week’s Viral Video of the Week that is so catchy? Is it just because its cute? Or is it the music that makes the video clip?

You tell us while we watch it again.

Check out this meme-licious list compiled by Greg Rutter (his second, btw). This list is pure gold, listing all the clips that make watching hours of online video so, so worth it.

You’ll notice that individuals aren’t the only ones contributing viral videos to the internet, but brands are also taking flint to stone, igniting memes across the interweb in an attempt to gain notoriety amongst their advocates online. The growth of online video marketing can be seen particularly by the number of brands who have a YouTube channel. For example, fifty-nine percent of U.S. companies in the Fortune Global 100 have YouTube channels compared with 52% in Europe, 35% in Asia-Pacific and 33% in Latin America.

Our staff favourites from Rutter’s list include both user generated content as well as brand advertising. We want to know which ones are your favourite and if you have one that isn’t listed.

Staff favourites include:

Steve Nash, the Canadian professional basketball player, is taking a move from 50 Cent’s playbook and exercising his funny bone in the latest Vitamin Water commercials.

It began in 2007 when Curtis Jackson, the Queens-born rapper known to most as 50 Cent, took a major turn in his career by signing a deal with Vitamin Water. As record sales dropped, critics claimed that Jackson was veering away from mainstream rap.

In an attempt to amp up his public persona, the deal with Vitamin Water made the rapper more appealing to the masses. Fiddy was seen in a new light, well new hair actually, (possibly NSFW, depending on your workplace’s policy on mild cursing and characters named “Pimpin’ Curly”), as the funny guy behind of the hilarious YouTube commercials.

Now Steve Nash has jumped on board the comedy train. The stringy haired athlete to adds some ridiculous flavour to the newly released Vitamin Water commercial, “The most ridiculous man in the world,” which spoofs Dos Equis’s Most interesting man in the world commercials.

Fiddy and Steve for Vitamin Water – which public personality will this campaign absorb next?
